Haydn’s 91st was written in 1788, the same year as Mozart’s 41st, the “Jupiter.” The first movement is among his most impressive in terms of engaging development and dramatic counterpoint, and some speculate that the finale of the “Jupiter” could have been inspired in part by this movement—especially its coda, which entwines previously heard themes in a similar if less spectacular manner.
